Oil-sealed vacuum pumps have a much wider variety of applications, and many different sizes of applications. For example, these types of pumps can be used for treated the turbine blades of a jet engine, or for something as small as manufacturing a light bulb. All LED lighting is done under vacuum manufacturing, and those would be oil-sealed systems.

As a general rule of thumb, if you’re creating something in a laboratory environment, either for biomedical or chemistry uses, a vacuum pump could probably come in handy. For example, if you’re doing some forensic study of bones, putting them inside of a vacuum chamber can help to keep them preserved.
